Where the industry is run, and where it is being built
Europe is where much of the mining industry is still run from. The head offices in London, Zug and Geneva hold the capital, the boards and the technical authority for assets spread across other continents, and Europe's smelters and refineries remain a serious part of the world's processing base.
Rising energy costs and carbon pricing have put Europe's smelters and refineries under strain, just as the drive to secure critical-mineral supply at home has turned them into a question of industrial policy, and the people who run and rebuild them are harder to find.
The Middle East is where a new industry is being built. Saudi Arabia has made mining the third pillar of its economy alongside oil and petrochemicals and opened the Arabian Shield to exploration, drawing international companies into the Gulf. Oman and the United Arab Emirates are pursuing their own mineral strategies, and much of the talent to run it all is still being brought in from outside.
So the two ends of this region call for very different people: the corporate and technical leaders who run a global business from Europe, and the operators and explorers opening new ground in the Gulf. The practice covers both.
