Running the mine, the smelter and the refinery
Australia runs some of the largest and most automated mining and processing operations anywhere. It mines iron ore, gold, copper and the base metals, and smelts and refines zinc and aluminium. Most of what we are asked to find here is operational: the person who runs the asset, under owners as different as a global major, an intermediate miner or a founder-led conglomerate.
The job has changed with the plant. Autonomous fleets, sensors on every machine, predictive maintenance and process control now run through a control room as much as a pit. Value comes from turning that data into throughput, and from leading a workforce through the redesign automation forces.
Many of these sites have to balance residential and FIFO workforces; employee recruitment and retention are constant challenges.
The same job is not the same job twice here. Running a large asset for a global major, an intermediate miner or a founder-led conglomerate asks for different temperaments, and the wrong fit shows long before the numbers do. The read is on who suits the owner as much as the ore.
